Read the December 2009 Doctor Flamingo Newsletter
| | by Doctor Flamingo | | Spring
of 2009 My most recent trip to France back in April was filled with wonderful
sights, meals, and shared experiences. I went with a close friend who showed me his favorite city, London, while I shared
my favorite sites in France with him. Highlights included the wisteria in bloom at all the Loire chateaux, the view from the
Eiffel tower, beef bourguignon at La Vieux Paris near Notre Dame, and strolling the harbor at Honfleur--a port my great grandfather
sailed into over a century ago. We stayed at an apartment in Paris near Place Republique, a convenient location
near all the major metro lines. We thrilled to see a ballet at the elegant and ancient Opera Garnier. And we loved strolling
the streets of London. | | The

Association of Baby Boomer Women | | Retirement finally arrived with flamingos on the lawn! Well...retirement for Doctor Flamingo finally arrived on December 1st. I said a sad farewell to
my colleagues and patients but was only too willing to give up on call duties (those runs to the Emergency room in the middle
of the night). And I said hello to having more leisure time...time to pursue hobbies, keeping up my online presence at my
Doctor Flamingo site and my duties as the Mental Health Advisor for the National Association of Baby Boomer Women (the top
online site for boomer women).
My most exciting prospect for retirement is becoming a grandmother for the third
time. My daughter and her husband are having their first child the end of January and I'm brushing up on my diaper changing
skills. I also plan to explore a new photo art hobby...taking travel photos and turning them into oil paintings with computer
software.
I also envison, for the guys out there, taking photos of exotic cars and combining them with their favorite
travel photos. It would be like taking your favorite ride to Paris with you. Or dreaming of being in a Ferrari rolling down
a Paris street. | | Latest

Degrees of Obsession from Amazon |
| | | | Have you been searching for that really good read for your favorite cousin
or co-worker? Be the next wonderful person to buy DOCTOR FLAMINGO'S NOVEL DEGREES OF OBSESSION AT A DISCOUNT PRICE of $2.99 plus shipping from Amazon. Degrees of Obsession continues to garner interest and rave reviews. Read this review of Degrees of Obsession by Robyn Y. Demby, author of What the Storyteller Brings:
What a beautiful description of the "meaning of it all" which dawned on the main character, Charlene,
in this novel: "The challenge of marriage was to find a steady beat, to rise above fractious moments, selfish choices,
and clouded beginnings. The goal was to find solace in familiarity, to set aside blame, to dig deep for the compassion that
could heal the wounds of body and soul."
Wow. I absolutely had to write that quote from Karen Stephen. This
novel was superbly written. Rich in description, the author's love of antiques was quite evident. The title accurately described
a novel which gave an inside look at the pain of infatuation; the power it holds over one's emotions and behavior, and how
it could take away the peace and contentment from another relationship as one tries to move on. It is sad how obsessing over
a bad man can blur a woman's appreciation for a good one.
Conflicting emotions shifted through me as I read this
book. With the hold this other man had over Charlene's senses, I experienced a forbidden excitement as I wondered if this
woman would be unfaithful to her husband. At the same time, concern for Charlene's marriage gave me a flicker of hope that
she would be able to control herself. Then the strong possibility that her husband would think that she was unfaithful anyway
made me wonder why she should bother holding back.
Not many authors can pull off flashbacks and get away with
it, yet Karen Stephen has great skill in this area. I couldn't make up my mind which was more riveting, the current dilemma
facing Charlene, or her flashbacks in time. Karen Stephen moved so seamlessly between the two that the past and present flowed
together as an artful blend of suspense and mystery.
Another quote I want to pull from her novel is, "I felt
my soul rise and take flight, with all the brilliant colorings of a mortal released from a cocoon of neediness and regret."
It is amazing how so few words could speak so much. I highly recommend this novel. I felt regret at finishing it as I enjoyed
it so much that I didn't want to let it go. Amazon Special $2.99 plus shipping Look for Used Book Seller DoctorFlamingo |
